Petro Lebedynets
Petro Lebedinets was ranked number four out of the top hundred contemporary artists in Ukraine by the national project 100 Artists: Modern and Contemporary Ukrainian Art since Independence of Ukraine in 1991.
He has exhibited in numerous locations and his works
are found in private collections.
Petro was born in Melitopol, Zaporizhia region, Ukraine, in 1956 and is
the most famous abstract artists from Ukraine – inside the country and abroad. He is a winner of numerous awards:
Certificate of Honour as participant in the art festival titled “Our Heritage” at the Metropolitan Museum and
National Arts Club in New York ; honorary prize Artist of the Year at the International Art Festival in Kyiv in 1997;
and honorary prize of the jury of the international exhibition Contemporary Art in Nice, 1996.
Petro is a husband to the artist Alla Alekseeva. The art couple left their studio in Kyiv, Ukraine at the start of the full
scale invasion and have settled in Vienna, Austria, where this collection of works has been created.
The works are boasting of colour, and have been thoughtfully and laboriously painted boasting of thick impasto.
The tactility of these paintings invites the viewer to engage in the age-old discourse about what is a superiors form
of art: painting or sculpture.
One can see similarities in how the two artists is handling oil paint – the old master medium that suddenly feels
fresh and very contemporary.
After two years in Austria, the art couple decided to return to their home. The paintings on display has been
created in exile and all date to the past two years.
